Latissimus Dorsi Flap Breast Reconstruction

USC Surgery / Treatments / Latissimus Dorsi Flap Breast Reconstruction

The latissimus dorsi muscle is a superficial muscle in the back that may be used for breast reconstruction in certain patients. This form of breast reconstruction can be done with and without an implant placed beneath the muscle to create a desirable breast shape. In many cases, a small portion of skin is included with the muscle to help restore the natural contour of the breast. This option for reconstruction is particularly good for patients who have had a previous mastectomy and/or radiation therapy.
