Diastasis Recti

USC Surgery / Conditions / Diastasis Recti

Diastasis recti, or abdominal separation, happens when the large abdominal muscles separate. It commonly occurs in women over the age of 35 who have given birth several times or to a large baby, and in obese men. It may appear as a bulge in the abdomen, sometimes only when the abdominal muscles are tensed. Treatment may include physical therapy and cosmetic surgery.
