USC Surgery / Conditions / Comorbidities Associated With Obesity

A comorbidity is a condition that is present at the same time as another disease. The following are comorbidities associated with morbid obesity:

  • High blood pressure/hypertension
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep apnea, a condition that causes a person to stop breathing repeatedly or breathe too shallowly during sleep

These comorbidities often are resolved through having bariatric (weight loss) surgery.
