Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the lower part of the esophagus is damaged, generally due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can cause heartburn and other chest pain, but it has no symptoms in many patients. In rare cases, it may be a precursor to esophageal cancer.
