Pancreatic, Gallbladder and Biliary Surgery

Our Program

Our surgeons are experts in treating issues related to the pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. Together, these organs make up the biliary tract, which functions to create, store and secrete bile for digestion.

We specialize in the surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer, including partial pancreatic resection and Whipple surgery; laparoscopic and robotic surgery for pancreatic, endocrine and bile duct disorders, such as gallstones; treatment of pancreatitis; and clinical protocols for pancreatic and bile duct cancer. We also treat abdominal endocrine tumors, which can be benign or become cancerous.

Keck Medicine of USC surgeons are able to offer a laparoscopic surgery option to certain patients who qualify with chronic pancreatitis, cystic tumors and islet cell tumors. Our goal is to limit recovery time and scarring with this minimally invasive technique to aid in such procedures as Whipple operation, distal pancreatectomy and liver resection.

Our Approach

As a surgery patient, you have access to a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and support staff, led by an experienced pancreatic and biliary physician. The goal is to provide optimal care to patients with complex pancreatic and biliary diseases.

Keck Medicine of USC physicians work together to treat a variety of related conditions, whether it’s pancreatic cancer that has resulted after a diabetes diagnosis or as a result of smoking, which dramatically increases the chances of pancreatic cancer. Our interventional gastroenterologists work closely with our pancreatic and biliary surgeons on interventional endoscopic procedures, such as placement of bile duct stents, removal of gallbladder stones, placement of pancreatic duct stents, removal of pancreatic duct stones and the drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts.
